Day 1: Arrival in Kigali Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your guide and driven to your hotel in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. Kigali is a modern and vibrant city that is known for its clean streets, excellent restaurants, and friendly people. After checking in to your hotel, take a city tour to see the various historical and cultural sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which serves as a tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide, and the Presidential Palace Museum, which provides a glimpse into the life of Rwanda’s former president. You can also visit the Inema Art Center to see the work of local artists and enjoy a traditional Rwandan meal at one of the city’s many restaurants.

Day 2: Visit Nyungwe National Park Take a scenic drive to Nyungwe National Park, which is located in the southwest of Rwanda and is home to one of the largest remaining montane rainforests in East and Central Africa. The park is known for its incredible biodiversity, with over 300 species of birds and over 70 species of mammals. Here, you can go on a guided nature walk or hike through the forest, visit the Ngabwe and Gisakura tea plantations, and take a canopy walkway over the treetops for a unique perspective on the forest canopy.

Day 3: Discover Lake Kivu Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and is located on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Take a boat tour of the lake and visit the local fishing villages, hot springs, and the Nyiragongo volcano. You can also take a swim in the lake’s clear waters or relax on one of the beaches.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwest of Rwanda and is home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Gorilla trekking is the highlight of any visit to Rwanda, and it is an unforgettable experience to see these magnificent animals up close in their natural habitat. You will need to obtain a permit to trek the gorillas, which can be arranged through the Rwanda Development Board. Trekking can take several hours, but it is well worth the effort to see these amazing creatures.

Day 5: Visit Musanze Caves Musanze Caves is located near Volcanoes National Park and is a network of caves formed by volcanic activity. The caves offer a unique opportunity to explore underground and see the stunning rock formations and bats. The caves are also significant in Rwandan history, as they were used as hiding places during the genocide.

Day 6: Visit Akagera National Park Akagera National Park is located in the east of Rwanda and is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and hippos. Take a game drive or a boat tour to see the wildlife up close, and learn about the park’s conservation efforts to protect these incredible animals.

Day 7: Departure on your final day, return to Kigali for your departure flight. If time allows, you can visit the Kimironko Market to buy souvenirs or stop at the Rwanda Art Museum to see the country’s rich artistic heritage. Rwanda is a small country and it is easy to get around, but be sure to plan enough time for travel between destinations or consider hiring a private guide to help navigate the country’s roads to ensure a smooth and safe trip.
